How does auto insurance work when you “loan” your car to another?

with 3 comments

Question by Irv S: How does auto insurance work when you “loan” your car to another?
I have been thinking of “loaning” my car (which I own) to my 87 year old father. I would then lease a vehicle for myself. Then at the end of the lease period (let’s say 3 years) if he is no longer driving, the car returns to me. Can he purchase auto insurance on himself and the car or does it fall upon me and my policy? My father has an excellent driving record and so do I.

Best answer:

Answer by snorzle
He would need to get his own insurance for the car, or to be added onto your policy as a driver.

Either one would work, but it might be cheaper (and easier) to add him to your existing policy.

Your coverage (in most cases) would not pay for any damage done to or done by the car while Dad is driving.

Am trying to find a auto insurance company that covers first offense dui drivers. With low cost auto insurance. Does anyone know of any?

Best answer:

Answer by PamelaS
Okay, short list of companies I am familiar with that in many states cater to or are affordable for “high-risk” drivers. I am not in FL, but these are fairly nationwide, there may be others who are less expensive, and there are certainly lots out there besides these few: Dairyland, Viking, Progressive, Geico.

How to get auto insurance from a state that your college is in rather than your resident state?

with 2 comments

Question by Kurt: How to get auto insurance from a state that your college is in rather than your resident state?
I live in New Jersey where the auto insurance is relatively expensive. However, I go to college in South Carolina where the auto insurance is a lot cheaper than in New Jersey. How can I get the cheaper South Carolina auto insurance? Do I need a South Carolina driver’s license to do this? Should I buy a car from a South Carolina dealership?

Best answer:

Answer by David
You can’t legally–you have to register and insure the car in your state of legal residence, in this case NJ. However, call your agent and check into a “college” rate–many companies give a discount if you’re at school over a certain distance from home. That may help.

Automotive Question Can the auto insurance company pay me directly for my medical expenses or do they have to pay the doctor?

with 2 comments

Question by Lorraine: Can the auto insurance company pay me directly for my medical expenses or do they have to pay the doctor?
I was in an auto accident and I have medical insurance. My medical insurance covered my medical expenses; however, I wanted to know if the auto insurance is still liable for those expenses? It seems as if my having medical insurance should benefit me and not the liable party’s auto insurance company. If I did not have medical insurance the auto insurance company would still have to pay for those expenses. So shouldn’t they still have to pay for those expenses and I get what ever is left that my medical insurance company did not pay? Are there any laws statures that back this up in Georgia? I am trying to settle this claim without getting an attorney and I need all the help I can get. Any advice would be helpful. I am in the process of writing a demand letter. Thanks for all the help.

Best answer:

Answer by Diane A
Yes and no. The medical bills should be refunded to you by the other person’s medical insurance if they were found at fault. Have your lawyer (or you) send a demand letter w/ a copy of the medical bills (before insurance took care of the cost). Then you will receive a ck from the auto insurance company to you for your bills.

Is the auto-insurance claim information shared if I switch the insurance company?

with one comment

Question by Sean P: Is the auto-insurance claim information shared if I switch the insurance company?
Hi!

I am with auto-insurance company X right now and due to few number of insurance claims that I had made, my insurance is going up. I am wondering if I try to switch to some company Y, will X share my claims information with Y?

Thanks!

Best answer:

Answer by Stupid Flanders
Your driving record (including accidents, tickets and filed claims) is public knowledge and is kept on a database through your state. Most states use the same database so that your driving record is basically public knowledge.

While Insurance company Y doesn’t get information directly from Insurance company X, all they have to do is look up on the database to find all of your tickets, claims and accidents.

Basically, you shouldn’t lie on your application because you won’t get away with it.

Car Insurance Discounts You Can Choose From

with 25 comments

Car Insurance Discounts You Can Choose From

If it’s about saving money, we are all very much interested. But it’s important to remember that the lowest insurance rates are not necessarily the best. Never purchase car insurance from a company who offers ridiculously low rates. We should be aware that sometimes, these “discount offers” can be a trick and will cost you more in the long run. So here are a few of the legit car insurance discounts that you can rely on and be assured that are not concealing large amount of problems.

DEFENSIVE DRIVING DISCOUNT- It could also save you money if you let your teen take a DRIVER’S EDUCATION COURSE or learn from professional instructors as most insurers offer discounts for teens that have successfully completed this course and signed an agreement about safe driving style to avoid tickets. This course teaches you some driving techniques to avoid accidents. Auto insurance companies believe that this course helps you become more aware of what is happening on the road.

GOOD STUDENT DISCOUNT- The classic discount is the good student discount. Most auto insurers believe that good students make responsible drivers so they give 5-10% premium discount if your kid has grade point average of at least B, staying out of trouble, or if your child goes to college or university as this means that they are leaving home.

CAR INSURANCE FOR TEACHERS- A person’s occupation actually plays a much larger role in determining auto premium. Most auto insurance providers offer up to 30% discounts to teachers. This will save you hundreds of dollars each year. Teachers are eligible for auto insurance discounts because teachers are simply less likely to file a claim or be involved in a collision. Teachers are known to be patient, cautious, and often live near their workplace. Most auto insurance companies believe that teachers are great drivers.

LOYALTY DISCOUNT- This is if you’ve been with your auto insurance company for a long period of time, especially if you’ve been accident-free for a number of years.

AUTO INSURANCE FOR SENIOR CITIZENS- As we get older, the need, desire, and ability to drive a car often times begins to diminish. This less time spent on the car leads to a massive saving on your auto insurance premium.

MILITARY AUTO INSURANCE- Although the discount varies from company to company, it’s safe to say that all major auto insurance providers offer at least 15% discounts to show appreciation to these men and women who risk their lives everyday to protect the people at home and abroad.  Veterans and members of the Reserves are also eligible for the same discounts. These discounts can also be extended to cover the other drivers in your family, which can be crucial when you aren’t always home to deal with issues yourself.

MULTIPLE CAR DISCOUNTS- The cost of insuring two cars can be the same or less expensive as insuring one. The more cars you insure, the bigger discount you’ll get. Most companies give at least 25% discount when insuring multiple cars. Multiple discount can not only be attained if you have 2 or more cars but this can also be enjoyed if you’re covered by a family plan that covers your entire family e.g. you, your spouse, and your kids in your house who are at their driving age. Typically, companies will only provide coverage to your children until they get 25 so even if they’re still living with you when they reach 25, they already have to obtain their own individual policy.

The discount also varies depending on the make and model of your car.  You may contact your insurance company first before purchasing a new car to inquire about their multiple car discounts. You can also shop around to get the best deal possible.

SAFETY ADDITION DISCOUNTS- Adding more airbags or getting new brakes can be a great way to add safety features to your car. Auto insurance companies really like it when you take matters into your own hands and improve your safety. If you’ve made any safety additions to your car then you need to see if you can get credit for doing so. Let the insurance company know that you’re taking control.

DISCOUNTS FOR ECO-FRIENDLY VEHICLES- Hybrid drivers represent less of a claims risk to insurers, and they are consequently rewarded with lower premiums. When you examine the profile of hybrid drivers, it becomes clearer why insurers favor these drivers. Most of them have a higher level of education, married, between ages 41-60, and have higher levels of income. (71% of them earn more than 0, 000).

There are surely a lot of discounts that you can choose from. All you need to do is invest your time in getting as many auto insurance quotes as possible and compare them. It may be time-consuming, but absolutely something that you’ll be thankful you did once you or your loved-ones get into car trouble.

Michigan Car Insurance Comparison Online

without comments

Michigan Car Insurance Comparison Online

Auto insurance is one industry which always remains full of activity due to several various reasons. Most of the potential auto insurance buyers do not get correct and timely information about the suitable coverage they need, the extent of risk that must be covered by them, cost of coverages, claim processing, customer service, etc. For this very reason, the internet has provided a way to help consumers complete a car insurance comparison to ensure that they are receiving reliable protection from a reputable company at an affordable price. Individual’s need to also take the time to understand the limits which are required by their particular state in order to be properly protected and abide by the state’s laws. Like any other state, Michigan requires that each owner and driver of an automobile must carry the proper liability coverage and it must be maintained at all times while their vehicle is being operated.

Minimum Liability:

Michigan auto insurance laws require No-fault insurance and it is against state law to operate a car without no-fault insurance. The minimum limits of a satisfactory policy issued has three parts:

Minimum BI/PD coverage limits for the state of Michigan

Up to ,000 for a person who is injured or killed in an accident. Up to ,000 for more than one person are hurt or killed. Up to ,000 for property damage.

These limits are often described as 20/40/10.

However, in case of legal proceedings, courts sometimes award more than these minimum limit amounts. In such case, the insured would be responsible for paying the amount not covered by the limit on the policy. To protect themselves against these situations, consumers should compare additional coverage in order to ensure that they have adequate protection. If within a person’s budget, they can choose higher limits to protect against incurring financial hardship in the event that they are involved in a collision in which they are found to be at fault and their policy’s payout has been exhausted.

Obtaining and comparing auto insurance quotes for higher amounts of liability may surprise many, as they may find that the difference of being covered more extensively may not be as expensive as they thought. Similarly, there are some optional insurance coverages one may wish to consider. These optional coverages are not mandatory but can prove to be quite beneficial. Such options include collision and comprehensive coverage, which unlike basic liability, will compensate the insured if they suffers a loss and not just the other party.

The advantage of utilizing the internet for the purpose of receiving prices for premiums is that within minutes, web surfers can receive multiple rates from a variety of insurers. This gives them the opportunity to compare not only prices but the companies as well. Although price is important, the integrity of an insurer should be considered as well. There are agencies that rate carriers that anyone can access to help determine who they would like to do business with. The internet also provides a way for potential customers to make a comparison of different types of coverage which may benefit them. Quotes can be provided to inquirers free of charge and with absolutely no obligation. The option to purchase is also made available so that customers can become insured instantly and receive instant proof of insurance.

Cheap Car Insurance – How to Get It

Cheap Car Insurance – How to Get It

With gas prices being the way they have people all over the country have started to get creative with their finances and the costs associated with auto travel.

Prices vary from company to company, so it pays to shop around. Get at least four to five price quotes. You will find that there are several websites out there that can save you the time from doing this the slow and hard way as they will often get you quotes from up to a dozen companies all at once. You can call companies directly or access information on the Internet. Your state insurance department may also provide comparisons of prices charged by major insurers. And no, companies like Progressive that claim they will compare other companies, but they are an insurance company, so they are not to be trusted. They only have one interest, and that is to promote their own business.

Bigger is not always better. There are several low cost automobile insurance companies offering competitive rates in relation to the big names out there. This makes it possible to save a bundle on this expense. Many people seem to ignore this cost and tend to accept the burden of expensive insurance even when monthly payments almost match a car payment. In one case, I lowered my car insurance rates by about 50% when I found a good local company (I had switched from a really big name company).

One of the best ways to get cheap car insurance is simply to use a service that forces insurance agents and brokers to compete against one another. At the end of this article is one example of such a site. As soon as you finish your online quote request, multiple agents will contact you. But it is important to NOT sign up with any one of them immediately-Instead, let them know that you are awaiting calls from other local insurance providers. After 5 or so of these people have contacted you, you should have a good idea of what sort of range you might expect to pay.

Then, if you really want to get the cheapest car insurance possible, simply tell the agents that you are ready to buy within the next 24 hours with whichever company offers you the lowest insurance rates. This really puts the fire under them, and is sure to create the most optimal pricing for you. Of course, be sure to carry through on your promise.

If it makes sense, you may want to consider getting a bundle package. Basically, see what it might cost to insure not only your car, but also your home, property, health and life insurance. This can save a person around 10% – 30% depending on the company you go with; and it does make paying your bills easier as well.

Oh, and one more tip, remember that the more info you provide upfront, the more accurate your quotes will be, and the more likely the insurance companies will be responsive to your inquiry. This is especially true when filling out a quote from multiple companies.

Here is one such website where you can get cheap car insurance quotes.
